Politics 2008 -- Part III

Can either Sen. Clinton or Sen. Obama get elected?

Democrats are in an historic place, set to either nominate the first African-American or the first female for the office of President of these United States. One hopes young people are paying attention because this just doesn't happen all the time. Yet, the trailblazing Democrats have set up the inevitable question: Is the country ready to elect a woman or an African-American to the White House?

It's a question that foreshadows a general election campaign where issues of race and gender take centerstage. And, if anyone was paying attention in South Carolina, the issue of race didn't take long to surface as the Clintons (Senator and former President) engaged Sen. Obama. And given the dynamic nature of race and gender in an election, can you imagine the nonsense that is sure to come from the "hater fringe" of both the Republican and Democratic parties?

Truth is, unless the Republicans just implode (certainly a possibility), neither Sen. Clinton or Sen. Obama is likely to win. But it will be a journey worth watching.

It was only a matter of time before that was a Black or a woman running for President of the good old USA. The theme of this election is change, but are we really prepared for the change that allows a minority to make decisions for the country? Sure we have come along since slavery and the Women's Liberation Movement, but ask yourself are you ready to trust a minority, classified by race and or gender, with decisions that will affect the entire nation. There are many people out there who support the views of Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama at the moment but on that day when it's time to cast the vote will that support still be there?
