The Government Is Really Looking This Time
|
|
One of the great services of talk radio in Chattanooga is that they regularly give out updates on where the local government is placing new cameras to catch speeders and people who roll through intersections on a yellow light. All drivers say thanks.
In our community, the new cameras started by a desire to stop accidents and slow down traffic at an admittedly dangerous set of curves. And it worked!
But today, our community has many, many more cameras popping up just about every day. One view by the local government is that it will be a good day when "cameras are sprinkled all over downtown." Now what's up with that? It's getting to the point where you have to keep an updated list of cameras in your car lest you risk getting the $50 ticket in the mail.
And, of course, the companies selling the cameras tell elected officials they are going to protect folks like you and me, so how can you not do this? Of course, behind the scenes, the cameras are talked about as a way to increase government revenue. Fabulous. A program that saves poor souls from rolling through a yellow and getting killed and a program that makes money at the same time. Can't get much better than that. That'll play in city halls across the country.
So a new rule. At every red light, smile and wave at the telephone poles around you. Somebody may be watching.
